A verdade do bordado está no seu avesso / The truth of an embroidery lies in its back stitches.

One more labyrinth, this one is very special, it was my very first attempt to freemotion embroidery with my sewing machine. Its far from perfection, but I'm soooo pleased with the final work. I've learned so much, it has so much personality and variety of stitches, shades, textures. It almost seems like a hand work full of character and personality as if it had a will of its one. Beyond perfection it is perfect because its imperfect, emotional and unique. It will be a gift to a dear friend (I already have to many labyrinths at home, its time for them to fly away).
So I'm really happy, happy with what I've learned, happy because despite being imperfect, I forced myself to get to the end and now I can look at it and see a story to be tell, each line, texture and stitch tell me something about live and my own process.
They say that the truth lies in the hidden stitches at the back of the embroidery, can you tell witch one is the front and witch one is the back on this embroidery?

Labirinto / Labyrinth

Do caos surge a clareza.

I lost my way so many times in the roads of life. But I follow through knowing that all the shortcuts and wrong roads lead to a main road, that leads to our center where the lotus flower hides.

From chaos comes clarity.

Om Mani Padme Hum

That's what this labyrinth is about.

Painted cotton cloth with natural colors, the main road was embroidered with silk thread and the chaotic paths where embroidered by machine with cotton. The back is weaved and finished with crochet.

Novos Caminhos / New paths

I feel drawn to labyrinths since I was a young girl. 1st I've discover the Greece-roman labyrinths and I remember being fascinated by the myths of Taurus in the island of Crete. I would see myself many times in a labyrinth without knowing my way out (Yung would have much to say about this rsrsrsr).
But it was when I moved to this house that I really got a deeper interest in labyrinths. My top neighbors were finishing a scale size Chartres labyrinth on their land and having the experience of walking trough it when it was done, made me want to study labyrinths from all over the world. It wasn't in my mind to make them, but my son asked me a small finger labyrinth for himself (what he really wanted was a big one like our neighbors), but we agreed that I would find a way of making a Chartres finger labyrinth for him. 1st I thought I could knit one. And I draw many many patterns but it didn't feel right. So I decided to go out of my comfort zone and start something knew like embroidery. I am in love with Baltic Neolithic art and I've been studying the Baltic labyrinths for a while (Chartres  is an evolution of these Neolithic labyrinths). So I've started with the most common shape, the one you see above. I did it because this is the shape that speaks more to my heart. And I just love the end result, the texture of the walls, the circular form that reminds me so much of a womb, and to be able to cross it with my finger, its a strong process of getting back to my center, witch I believe that what these ancient labyrinths are all about.
I've used hand and machine embroidering, the back was woven with hadspuned yarn and I've used a quilt filling to make it strong. Its a piece that I'm proud of.
I'm already in starting the Chartres labyrinth for my son. And I'm so so glad I've left my comfort zone and started a new path.
Where shall it take me?

Ana

2015 was one of the most  challenging years for me.
One year ago I wanted to work on my ability to finishing what I start, and I've decided to do that truth knitting. How many of you have several on going knitting projects with years already? I purpose to myself to start and finish each one of my projects as an internal exercise of patience and persistence. After many challenges, many tears and a lot of inner growth ( a long with lots of sweaters, jackets and other knitting projects) I finish the year with a rug knitted during December the only project I've worked on (usually I have at least 4 or more going on at the same time). And to not loose the flow, I'm starting a new rug with handspuned yarn. First I have to spin 1 kg of fleece and you don't imagine how hard it is to me to put my needles aside and have them quite for a while, but I need to overcome this exercise so I can gain the inner straight to conquer my challenges for 2016.
I wish you all the strength and the courage to follow your Hearts and to go where He tells you to, even if it challenges you or cost you pain and sacrifice. Your Heart is the only one you knows the way back to the center.
Lots of love
Ana

De dentro para fora / From the inside to the outside

My little workspace is ready. Other parts of the house are still in need of renovation. For now I went back to work with my textiles, to protect, beautify and give this new house what it needs. Then gradually my creations will again serve people. But now I'm working in my inner and outer house. Inspired by my everyday landscapes, the roads I ride with my bike or I walk with my dog, learning from the way the landscape is constantly changing around me. And so I'm preparing to host the Winter witch is just around the corner. I realized that I've been in the past years rushing, in this very fragile season when we are invited to cultivate the light within us, to finish clients orders or to think about presents. This year I'm really living the advent, letting
the beauty, faith and light to grow within me. This will mean that I will not respond to orders and will not give presents to my loved ones. But I'll be truly PRESENT in the company of those I LOVE!

In the last few days I've been surrounded by love and friendship. And though the world out there is facing major challenges (I don't want to make comments on them), I read today that a neurocientist found out that generosity is contagious! Off course it is don't you think? So when my therapist let me take her healing tuning forks  home to help me trough a bad time (see more about them here) I had the inspiration to make a unique case for them, handspuned made specially for her. Last week inspired by autumn I also made little dwarfs (see picture above) to donate to the annual market at my son's school. It's just so good to be able to step up from the dark around us, and focus on love and gratitude.  That's why I choose not to comment on the world's news, 1st because I always feel that the media only show what they want us to see, 2nd because fear it's not going to save us. So I choose to make little things to spread Love and Gratitude around me, and if the doctor is right, maybe it will spread and get to the ones that most need it, even the ones that want us to believe they are not worth it.

Deixar ir... / To let go....

A relação comigo e a relação com o meu companheiro estavam a desgastar-me.

Last week was a very hard week. I felt a war inside me and I couldn't understand why. I did and undid my Autumn sweater so many times without getting it.  It just didn't felt right, I was so frustrated with it as I was with me, my life and my relationships. If I have health, love and friendship if the hard work I'm putting in my garden is being compensated by mother nature, why was I felling frustration instead of gratitude? In despair I've decided to give up on the sweater and  began to make a scratch of a pattern for one Autumn leaf, I began to knit for the sake of the experience itself without any expectations, and some peace began to arose within me, my inner child began to feel fed by the experience of creating something new, just for the fun of doing it.

So Friday i got this invitation for E.'s birthday party (I was her kindergarten teacher last year in a Steiner school in Barril do Alva called Caracol ao Sol), and I was very glad for the chance of celebrating such a special day with her and her family, at the same time I got worried because I didn't had any gift special enough for such a special child. And suddenly I looked at my knitting project and there it was an autumn headband (she wears headbands all the time) for an Autumn child. How perfect was that? I felt such a deep gratitude in my soul. It reminded me what I knew for so long, that we must trust the process and let go... I did it so many years with the personalized dolls I've created but somehow along the way I forgot how important it is to trust the process and let go of the expectations, and here I was being reminded again.
Meanwhile I've finished a book marker handspuned by me, a special gift for a very special friend.
For me inner work and outer work go always hand to hand, could it be any other way?

Castanhas e memórias / Chestnuts and memories

Chestnut trees are my favorites. I could not believe when choosing  this house I found a chestnut tree in my garden. I miss the time when these trees where one of the main species in the north and center of the Portuguese landscape. Today you must know were to go to find old forests of chestnut trees, magical places where centenary trees learned how to escape from the destructive progress of bad forestry management. But that's not what this post is about. This post is about memories, my one very personal ones...

This week working in my garden I've been seeing how the chestnuts fall shyly to the ground, and I cant avoid remembering my father (from the north of Portugal living in Oeiras-near Lisbon). He would get home from work and changed his cloths and then fill up his pockets with raw chestnuts, that we would eat on his way to his vegetable garden (a government land occupied by him and three more neighbors). I still have in my audible memory the crack of the chestnut in his mouth and the whistle between the cracking and the chewing.
Now I work on my land alone and I think about him and how much I wish we could be here helping me in the garden between chewing chestnuts just fallen from the tree and his beautiful whistle just like a nightingale. Mas its just me and my memories and now you who read me,we both perpetuating the memory of my father.
